The Institute for Development (i4D) is an independent, Malawian-led non-profit organisation established in 2018 by a multidisciplinary team of public health professionals, researchers, policy specialists, economists, lawyers, social scientists, environmental experts and governance professionals. We work with government ministries, communities, civil society, academia and development partners to generate evidence, strengthen institutions and deliver sustainable development across Malawi.
Founded in 2018 and headquartered in Blantyre, i4D works with government ministries, communities, civil society and academia across Malawi.
To become Africa's leading centre of excellence in systems strengthening, research, policy innovation and community transformation, delivering sustainable solutions that improve lives and accelerate inclusive development.
To generate evidence, influence policy, strengthen institutions, foster innovation and empower communities through research, technical assistance, partnerships and capacity development that promote equitable and sustainable development.
Country ownership and locally led development · evidence-informed decision-making · systems strengthening through existing government and community structures · sustainability beyond project cycles · active community participation · adaptive learning · transparent accountability · environmental sustainability · gender equality and social inclusion · strategic partnership.
i4D believes sustainable development occurs when five conditions exist together: evidence informs decisions; institutions function effectively rather than depending indefinitely on external actors; communities own and shape interventions rather than receiving them passively; partnerships create synergy across government, academia, civil society, donors and the private sector; and innovation and adaptive learning drive continuous improvement. Where all five conditions are present, development gains tend to be more durable, locally owned and adaptable — the outcome our programming is designed to produce.

Six core values guide how the Institute for Development (i4D) designs, implements and reports on all of its work and partnerships.
i4D's Strategic Programme Framework is deliberately aligned with the major international, continental and national frameworks shaping Malawi's development trajectory, so that our contribution reinforces rather than duplicates existing commitments.
